The enumeration of vertex induced subgraphs with respect to the number of components

چکیده
Inspired by the study of community structure in connection networks, we introduce the graph polynomial Q (G;x, y), the bivariate generating function which counts the number of connected components in induced subgraphs. We give a recursive definition of Q (G; x, y) using vertex deletion, vertex contraction and deletion of a vertex together with its neighborhood and prove a universality property. We relate Q (G; x, y) to other known graph invariants and graph polynomials, among them partition functions, the Tutte polynomial, the independence and matching polynomials, and the universal edge elimination polynomial introduced by I. Averbouch, B. Godlin and J.A. Makowsky (2008). We show that Q (G; x, y) is vertex reconstructible in the sense of Kelly and Ulam, discuss its use in computing residual connectedness reliability. Finally we show that the computation of Q (G;x, y) is ♯P-hard, but Fixed Parameter Tractable for graphs of bounded tree-width and clique-width.

TOTAL DOMINATION POLYNOMIAL OF GRAPHS FROM PRIMARY SUBGRAPHS
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The total dominating set is a subset $D$ of $V$ that every vertex of $V$ is adjacent to some vertices of $D$. The total domination number of $G$ is equal to minimum cardinality of total dominating set in $G$ and denoted by $gamma_t(G)$. The total domination polynomial of $G$ is the polynomial $D_t(G,x)=sum d_t(G,i)$, where $d_t(G,i)$ is the numbe...
متن کاملNote on the Subgraph Component Polynomial
Tittmann, Averbouch and Makowsky [The enumeration of vertex induced subgraphs with respect to the number of components, European J. Combin. 32 (2011) 954–974] introduced the subgraph component polynomial Q(G;x, y) of a graph G, which counts the number of connected components in vertex induced subgraphs. This polynomial encodes a large amount of combinatorial information about the underlying gra...
متن کاملPerfect Matchings in Edge-Transitive Graphs
We find recursive formulae for the number of perfect matchings in a graph G by splitting G into subgraphs H and Q. We use these formulas to count perfect matching of P hypercube Qn. We also apply our formulas to prove that the number of perfect matching in an edge-transitive graph is , where denotes the number of perfect matchings in G, is the graph constructed from by deleting edges with an en...
متن کاملA CHARACTERIZATION FOR METRIC TWO-DIMENSIONAL GRAPHS AND THEIR ENUMERATION
The textit{metric dimension} of a connected graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices in a subset $B$ of $G$ such that all other vertices are uniquely determined by their distances to the vertices in $B$. In this case, $B$ is called a textit{metric basis} for $G$. The textit{basic distance} of a metric two dimensional graph $G$ is the distance between the elements of $B$. Givi...
متن کاملBounding cochordal cover number of graphs via vertex stretching
It is shown that when a special vertex stretching is applied to a graph, the cochordal cover number of the graph increases exactly by one, as it happens to its induced matching number and (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity. As a consequence, it is shown that the induced matching number and cochordal cover number of a special vertex stretching of a graph G are equal provided G is well-covered bipa...
